The June 9, 1973 Belmont Stakes heralded in the coronation of Secretariat as the first Triple Crown winner in 25 years. To this day, Secretariat's performance in the race remains one of the most electrifying in all of sports history. With the eyes of the nation watching, Secretariat fulfilled not only the hopes and dreams of the Meadow Stable but also a country desperate for a hero during the time of Watergate and Vietnam. The race unfolded as long-time rival Sham valiantly dueled with Secretariat from the start, setting track record fractions early on only to fall behind in his desperate effort to keep up with the powerful yet effortless rhythmic stride of his big red rival. From the turn to the wire, Secretariat's increasingly wide margin grew to epic proportions, stretching his lead over the rest of the field by an amazing 31 lengths and stopping the clock in the world record time of 2:24 for the 1 1/2 mile distance. It was a moment apart, detached and everlasting. Never before or since has the margin of victory or winning time even been remotely approached in this classic race labeled the "Test of the Champion".

The official winners circle composite features an array of photos consisting or nine separate images showing Secretariat with jockey Ron Turcotte aboard from the post parade to the triumphant winner's circle celebration. Gathered for the historic ceremony are owner Penny Chenery, siblings Margaret Carmichel and Hollis Chenery, trainer Lucien Laurin with New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller making the Triple Crown trophy presentation.
